HIGH TEMPERATURE FILTRATION PERFORMANCE

Filter bags of woven fabrics and needled felt fabrics of 100% TEFLON® PTFE fluoropolymer fibers are used in many industrial gas filtration applications where temperatures reach as high as 500°F (260°C) and the environment often contains corrosive chemicals. Filter bags of TEFAIRE® filtration felt combine the thermo-chemical resistance of TEFLON® with the enhanced particle removal of fine diameter glass fiber. Both filtration media are being used in product collection and for the control of pollutants from coal-fired boilers, municipal and industrial incinerators, and smelting operations.

In addition, TEFLON® Filter Guard TM, a filter bag liner of 100% TEFLON®, can be used to enhance the performance and increase the wear life of filter media containing TEFLON® or other fibers. Filters containing TEFLON® fiber are also used in certain liquid filtration or coalescence (mist elimination) systems where corrosive chemicals at elevated temperatures are encountered. In some high temperature or chemically aggressive filtration applications natural fiber may gradually bleach to a lighter or white color.

INTRODUCING TEFAIRE® HG TECHNOLOGY

TFA’s TEFLON® brand fibers is announcing the introduction of a new filtration offering that is designed to provide excellent filtration service in the most severe applications typically served by 100% PTFE felts or filter media coated with membrane while providing solutions to their known short comings such as strength at temperature, abrasion resistance and dimensional stability.

Our filtrations tests (figure 1) using aluminum oxide particles shows that TEFAIRE® HG filtration efficiency is equivalent to the finest PTFE staple fibers commercially available and our own TEFAIRE® offering which has proven itself in hundreds of incinerator applications involving hundreds of thousands of installed filter bags.

TEFAIRE® HG TECHNOLOGY FELT FABRIC PROPERTIES

While 100% PTFE felts have long been used for hot gas filtration and product collection, it is recognized that PTFE fibers weaken at very high temperatures. This can lead to a loss of dimensional stability of the filter bag at high temperatures even when high tenacity PTFE fibers are used for the scrim.

The TEFAIRE® HG Technology provides additional dimensional support to the felt by its unique blend of staple fibers. The net result is a felt that has excellent strength and dimensional stability at temperature when compared to 100% PTFE felts.

TEFAIRE® HG TECHNOLOGY FELTS IDEALLY SUITED FOR PRODUCT COLLECTION

These felts combine three unique properties to provide a product that is ideally suited for collecting abrasive materials such as aluminum oxide or titanium oxide:

  • Higher strength at temperature, which assures the bag, can handle its weight and the weight of the filter cake without distortion
  • Little penetration of the felt by the collected material, which prevents blinding of the filter media and better process yields (See Figures 2 through 5).
  • Excellent abrasion resistance when compared to 100% PTFE felts and our current TEFAIRE® product (See Figures 6 through 8).
